Extension of deadlines or leave of absence due to illness

You can apply for an extension to deadlines or an extension to the maximum duration of study if you are unable to take as many examinations as the examination regulations stipulate due to disability or illness.

However, it is also possible that you are only ill on a single examination date. In this case, please apply immediately to the Examinations Office for incapacity to take the examination due to illness. If you are ill for a longer period of time during the current semester and are therefore unable to take any examinations, you should in most cases apply for a leave semester due to illness. Please seek advice, especially if you are receiving BAföG.

Extending the deadline for written work is an academic adjustment. If you have a disability or a chronic or mental impairment, you can apply for academic adjustments .

However, if you are acutely unable to complete your term paper in the time available due to an impairment, please discuss this with the supervisor of the term paper by submitting a medical certificate (see information sheet). If you need help with this, please contact the Student Disabilities Officer.

Examples:

  • an episode of a chronic or mental illness
  • a chronic or mental illness that has occurred for the first time
  • another acute illness
  • a difficult personal situation (e.g. serious illness or death of a relative)

If you would like to apply for an extension for your bachelor’s dissertation, master’s thesis or Zulassungsarbeit due to an illness in the sense of an “examination-relevant physical, mental and/or psychological dysfunction”, please contact the person responsible for dissertations/theses in the Examinations Office. An information sheet provides information on how to apply.

If you would like to apply for access arrangements for disadvantages in the form of an extension of the maximum duration of study due to a disability, chronic or mental illness, you must submit an informal application for an extension of the maximum duration of study to the relevant administrative office of your degree programme in the Examinations Office. Please describe in the application the illness-related symptoms that lead or have led to the fact that you were unable to complete your studies within the maximum period of study and therefore require an extension of the period of study beyond the maximum period of study.

You must enclose a medical certificate from a specialist or family doctor describing how your illness affects your studies and that you require an extension of your study period due to illness. Please also refer to the information sheet on the certificate.

You submit the application shortly before the end of the maximum period of study. If possible, the examinations office should be informed of the existence of a health impairment at an early stage.

Extension of deadlines for achieving a certain number of ECTS credits or passing the intermediate examination

In the degree programmes of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Information Systems and the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics, there is a regulation that a certain number of ECTS points must be achieved during the first semesters. When studying law, the intermediate examination must be passed after the fifth semester and the University examination after the 16th semester at the latest.

If you can foresee that you will not be able to fulfil this requirement due to disability, chronic or mental illness, you can submit an informal application for an extension of the deadline, enclosing a certificate from a specialist or general practitioner.

Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics

You send the informal application together with a certificate and a transcript of the passed and failed examinations by e-mail directly to the chairperson of the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics.

Faculty of Business, Economics and Information Systems

You apply for an extension of the deadline by submitting an informal application and a certificate to the person responsible in the Examinations Office, who checks the application and forwards it to the Board of Examiners.

Faculty of Law

You apply for the extension of the deadline via the person responsible for the intermediate legal examination at the Examinations Office and address the application to the Dean of the Faculty of Law, who will decide on the application.

They also apply for an extension of the deadline for the university examination via the person responsible for the intermediate legal examination at the Examinations Office, but address the application to the chairperson of the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Law, who will decide on the application.
