The University of Passau (UP) is dismayed by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Our special concern is for the students and academics at our Ukrainian partner universities, and we feel for all members of our university community who are fearing for their families and friends in Ukraine during these days. Several Ukrainian universities have suffered severe damage, forcing both staff and students to seek refuge in other regions of Ukraine or even in other countries. Strengthening the connections with our existing partners - and cultivating new connections - is one means by which the University of Passau expresses its solidarity.
Aligned with the university's strategic emphasis on internationalisation, the Europe Office runs an internal "Task Force Ukraine" at the University of Passau, with the aim of fostering cooperation with Ukrainian institutions. In the midst of the ongoing war, it is our aim to not only offer support within our academic community, but also to enhance and sustain collaborative endeavors in teaching and research with Ukrainian institutions.
The first milestone in fostering the cooperation between a Ukrainian university and the University of Passau is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the presidents of both institutions. Once signed, the bilateral cooperation is officially secured.
The Task Force Ukraine is creating additional exchange opportunities for the 2023 winter semester. Students on Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes at Ukrainian partner institutions will be encouraged spend to one or two semesters at the University of Passau. Some of these will be supported by a dedicated scholarship scheme.
We anticipate that, starting in 2024, academic exchanges between the University of Passau and Ukrainian universities will be integrated into the Erasmus+ programme, which will open up additional opportunities and support.
Following the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), the process of developing double degree programmes begins. These programmes will generally span a duration of four semesters, cover 120 ECTS credits and lead to a Master of Science degree qualification. It is envisioned that all modules for the double degree programmes will be taught in English, ensuring a shared language of instruction for all participants.
Initially, Ukrainian university students will be offered the opportunity to complete a portion of their studies at the University of Passau, augmenting their studies at their home universities. They will be able to obtain both a Ukrainian and a German Master's degree. As soon as the security situation permits, students from the University of Passau will be encouraged to participate in this bilateral initiative as well.
