The diverse bicycle parking facilities on campus play a crucial role in promoting the use of bicycles. This not only helps to reduce car traffic on campus and the associated emissions of greenhouse gases and particulate matter, but also promotes the healthy practice of cycling.
With a total of over 850 bicycle racks, the campus offers sufficient parking facilities for students and employees. Additional covered parking facilities with lockable boxes especially for e-bikes are currently being built in the NK and are due to open in the spring. There are also bicycle parking facilities in the university's underground car parks, the locations of which can be seen on the map.
A bicycle repair station has been enriching campus life since spring 2023. The station provides the necessary tools to deal with unexpected bike breakdowns with confidence. This innovation is the result of the ongoing commitment of the Green University Group, which worked in partnership with the Facility Management department to find a suitable location. The station was expertly installed by the in-house workshop.
The station is located behind the IM in the direction of the ITZ.
JobBike is a model of company bicycle promotion that enables employees of the University of Passau to lease bicycles and e-bikes through the university. In this way, we are improving the opportunities for sustainable mobility and the health of our employees. You can find more information in the Human Resources section.
The introduction of currently around 30 e-charging stations on campus is a significant step towards promoting sustainable mobility. These stations not only offer students and staff the opportunity to conveniently charge their electric vehicles, but also actively contribute to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and supporting environmentally friendly means of transportation. E-bikes and e-pedelecs can be charged in the bicycle garage in the Nikolakloster.
The ten cars in the university's fleet will be completely converted to electric vehicles in the medium term. The President's company car is already electric, as is the building services team with an electric van. With these purchases, the university is setting an example for sustainability and environmental awareness. Bicycles and e-bikes are also available for the estates team to get around the campus in an environmentally friendly way.
The Bavarian travel policy sets out the principles and regulations for business trips by employees of the Free State of Bavaria. It includes guidelines on travel expense claims, accommodation costs, travel expenses and additional meal expenses. The directive promotes environmentally friendly means of transportation for business trips. This means that the use of public transport as a means of business transportation is supported, i.e. higher travel costs are covered and additional overnight stays are granted. Air travel should be avoided and only used as a means of transportation for essential trips.
In accordance with the Bavarian Climate Protection Act (Art. 4), the unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions from air travel caused by public authorities and institutions of the state administration, including the university, are offset. Since 2020, this compensation has been carried out centrally via the Bavarian State Agency for Energy and Climate Protection (LENK) by purchasing corresponding certificates on the market. The resulting costs are passed on annually to the university, which then allocates them to the chairs and facilities.
There is additional funding for environmentally friendly mobility for students on Erasmus trips abroad: Green-Erasmus+. In order to receive the funding, low-emission means of transportation such as bus, train or carpooling must be used. In return, there are additional unit costs of 50 euros and up to four extra travel days
