The University of Passau enjoys a high reputation as a leading academic institution in the heart of Europe. Of our approximately 11,000 enrolled students, more than 1,600 are of international origin, coming from over 100 countries. Exchange students can study and research at the University of Passau for one or two semesters (six months or one year).

If you're a student at one of our partner institutions, your institution can nominate you for a study exchange at the University of Passau. On request, your institution will provide you with information about the application and candidate selection procedures. Once you have been nominated, we will contact you by email.
Once you've been nominated and once we've contacted you with information about registering your exchange, you will have to complete this registration with the University of Passau by submitting certain documents.
Deadlines:
The International Office will assist you with enrolling at the University via the applicant portal for visiting and exchange students. Enrolment will be completed during the orientation weeks for international students. Taking part in the orientation programme is a compulsory part of any study exchange with the University of Passau.
If your university or your academic department isn't currently one of our international partners, you may nonetheless be able to undertake a study exchange at the University of Passau, as a visiting student ('Freemover' in German). Contact us to find out more.
While the official recommendation suggests students in Germany should have at least 992 Euros per month available to them, in Passau, the costs of living are lower than they are in bigger cities. Among other things, the rents for accommodation are much cheaper.
Students who take part in an ERASMUS+ programme will receive a scholarship through their home institution. You can find out more at the International Office there.

You must have comprehensive health insurance cover if you wish to study at a German university. If you don't have a proof of health insurance, the University cannot permit you to enrol. For detailed guidance, visit our page about health insurance for international students.
If your home country is not a part of the European Economic Area (EEA), then you will require a visa or a residence permit to study in Passau.
