In the new GreenMetric ranking, the University of Passau is ranked 134th out of a total of 1,183 participants, which is particularly remarkable given that the number of participants has increased by another 13 percent since last year. It is also very gratifying that the University's overall score has risen by another 200 points and is now at 8,180 points out of a maximum of 10,000.

Just like last year, Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands) came out on top in the ranking, scoring 9,500 points. Nottingham Trent University (UK) again took second place, with the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld/Trier close on its heels in third place. The University of Passau continues to hold the third-best position among German universities.

"The result is a strong confirmation of our work as a scientific player for sustainable development. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who was actively involved", said University President Professor Ulrich Bartosch.

"We are delighted with this renewed confirmation that the University of Passau's successes in the sustainability sector are not just a one-off, but can actually be considered sustainable in the true sense of the word – and for the third year in a row. The ranking results also serve as a benchmark for our efforts to keep the University of Passau on a sustainable course and to achieve the goal of climate neutrality", said Professor Werner Gamerith, the University's Sustainability Commissioner, adding that this is "a development process in which the University's Climate Action Manager position created in 2023 has played a major role. Angie Schüppel's strategic work in this area deserves the greatest respect."

A non-profit initiative of the University of Indonesia, the GreenMetric Ranking has been conducted annually since 2010. It tracks a comprehensive range of sustainability activities and parameters of international universities and other higher education institutions. Specifically, the following six categories are examined: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation and Education.
