FAQ on counselling

As a crisis intervention and counselling centre, we offer uncomplicated counselling and support for all kinds of crises and stresses.

Reasons for counselling can be: exam anxiety, concentration and learning difficulties, procrastination, adjustment problems (e.g. separation from the parental home, changed life situation), self-doubt, depressive moods, lack of motivation and drive, anxiety, eating and obsessive-compulsive disorders, psychosomatic complaints, social difficulties, loneliness or disorientation, addiction problems, experiences with sexual harassment, discrimination, private and/or non-academic stress, relationship issues.

Please make an appointment via our secretary's office by phone or e-mail. A session usually lasts 50 minutes. Sessions are confidential. You do not need to present a health insurance card. First, we will discuss your issues and go over your situation and concerns. Next, we will identify underlying reasons for the issues and their current context, and work towards solutions and concrete next steps. An important part of our work is also a professional assessment of whether further and more in-depth psychotherapeutic treatment is recommended or not. If necessary, we will refer you to other competent, specialised counselling centres or contact persons.

If it is helpful, we also offer sessions in which you can bring others who are relevant to the issue or your well-being.

The conselling sessions are confidential. Neither your health insurance company nor your university or other counselling centres will find out about your counselling. The only exception is if you explicitly release us from confidentiality, should it be necessary or helpful, or in an emergency.

You may have to expect a wait time. Since the wait time varies depending on the demand for counselling appointments, we ask you to make an appointment as soon as possible.

We usually offer up to 5 sessions. However, this can vary individually depending on the issues and situation.

Counselling sessions take place at the Psychological-Psychotherapeutic Counselling Centre, Innstrasse 41 (administration building) Room 113, 94032 Passau or online.

Psychological-psychotherapeutic counselling is free of charge for students of the University of Passau. This also applies to doctoral students.

We offer counselling sessions in German and English.

Psychotherapy involves the identification (diagnosis) and healing or alleviation of mental disorders. This is usually covered by statutory and private health insurance. Depending on the procedure and the indication, support of 12 to 300 hours is offered.

The Psychological-Psychotherapeutic Counselling Centre at the University of Passau does not offer psychotherapy. We can clarify whether psychotherapeutic care or contact with a physician may be useful and advisable or even necessary in an urgent crisis.

You can find a list of registered psychotherapists on the website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Bayern (KVB) (German only). You can also use this website to find contact persons who can help you find an appointment. However, you may have to expect rather long wait time.

The Therapeutenkammer Bayern PTK Bayern (German only) also offers support in finding a therapist.

Finding a therapy place is not withing the scope of our work. However, we are happy to support you in taking the next steps and helping clarify things, for example, currently approved psychotherapeutic treatment procedures.
