Registering as a resident in Passau

You are required to register in Passau as a resident within two weeks of moving in to your new accommodation if the duration of your stay exceeds three months. We will provide further information during the Orientation Programme; you can also read the web page referenced below.

Non-EU citizens: If you are not an EU national in addition to your registration as a resident, you require a residence permit (‘Aufenthaltstitel’), which you have to apply for from the City of Passau's Ausländeramt ('Foreigners' Office) as soon as possible or at the very latest eight weeks before your visa expires. Details on the process are provided during the Orientation Programme.

(Proof of) health insurance

University students in Germany must have health insurance.  This includes exchange students. You will have to prove that you have health insurance for your matriculation (enrolment) at the University. You will also have to show your proof of health insurance if you apply for a residence permit.

You can obtain a proof of health insurance from any German statutory health insurance provider of your choice. During the international orientation weeks, the local branches set aside time slots for appointments with international students. The branch offices can be found at the following locations:

Health insurance provider Branch location
AOK Neuburger Straße 92
Barmer Nibelungenplatz 4
Die Techniker (TK) Nibelungenplatz 1
DAK-Gesundheit Am Schanzl 8

For more information, see our page about health insurance for international students.

Campuscard

The CampusCard is a smart card that combines various functions: it is your student ID, bus pass, library card, printer-copier card as well as an access card for the electronic lockers and the Sports Centre turnstiles and, perhaps most importantly of all, the card you will use to pay for your meals at the refectory and the cafeterias on campus. Please don’t forget to validate your card using one of the validation terminals on campus to make it a valid bus pass and student ID. Please note that you cannot use the card as a bus pass before 01 April 2024.

Your CampusCard is printed soon after you have applied for it. You should then validate it – the card can only be used during the validity period that is printed on the card!

Rundfunkbeitrag

You will probably have to pay the  Rundkfunkbeitrag (public service broadcaster contribution fee).  In individual cases, you may also be exempt from the obligation to pay. On the website of the contribution service of ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio, you can find out whether you are required to pay.
