Applied theology for a career in Catholic ministry

With the Master’s programme in Pastoral Ministry, the University of Passau provides a new path into pastoral care and related professions, based in the Christian tradition. The programme is designed to enable Church volunteers and people looking for a career change to gain the required qualifications.

The Master’s programme helps you gain an in-depth proficiency in applied theology, in order to prepare you for taking on 21st century pastoral duties. Additionally, you will learn techniques for pastoral counselling and you’ll apply yourself to your personal spiritual growth. You’ll apply the skills you attain in required internships alongside your studies and you’ll write a Master’s thesis reflecting on the course teachings at an academic level.

Online, flexible and authentic

  • You can complete the programme full time (in 4 semesters) or part-time (in 8 semesters), alongside your job or family commitments
  • Teaching will primarily take place online (pre-recorded, as live session, or on-site with remote participants via video conferencing). You’ll be able to study when and where it fits into your own schedule. On-site teaching is usually limited to one or two weekends each semester.
  • Much of the course is taught by the so-called “inverted classroom” method, where students are provided with materials for self-directed study in advance and the shared (virtual) sessions are used to discuss and deepen the knowledge. Despite the high proportion of self-directed study, teaching staff are there to support you through your academic journey. You won’t feel abandoned.
  • You’ll find an excellent student-staff ratio, with small class sizes and frequent direct contact with teaching staff
  • The programme has been launched in collaboration with the Diocese of Passau, an employer seeking to fill a staffing gap affecting the church in Germany.

The Master’s programme has been designed not just for recent graduates, but also for people with jobs and/or family commitments who want to gain this qualification for a career change.

Career prospects

After completing your studies, which focus on practical and socially relevant theology, a Master's degree opens up many career opportunities. The Catholic Church has many vacancies that need to be filled with professionals, especially in pastoral roles.

You can work in various areas of church ministry, such as parish work, sacramental teaching, youth ministry, care for the sick and grieving, and emergency pastoral care. Each diocese, as a potential employer, will have its own guidelines, so it's important to get in touch with your diocese early.

Additionally, you can also work in adult education and counseling.

If you're interested in an academic career, the Master's programme also provides the opportunity to pursue doctoral study (Dr. phil.).
