Launch of the TEFE A+ project: English teachers for the Europe of the future

The University of Passau has set itself the task of making the teaching subject of English in the teacher training programme more international and motivating its students in the teacher education programmes to gain even more intercultural experience during their studies. The University of Passau's English teacher training programme already had this focus with its predecessor project TEFE (Teachers of English for Future Europe). Building on its success, the follow-up project TEFE A+ (Teachers of English for a Future Europe - Putting the Internationalisation of Teaching Practice into Action) now aims to put the internationalisation of teacher training into practice

Networking and exchange between students in the teacher teacher education programmes, lecturers and teaching staff from a total of six partner universities plays a central role in TEFE A+. The project is based on the principle that modern English teachers not only teach language and culture, but also make an essential contribution to promoting critical thinking and the appreciation of democratic values. In order to prepare future teachers for this task, TEFE A+ is committed to ensuring that students can gain a wide range of positive, real international teaching experiences from the very beginning of their training.

The project aims to establish intercultural teaching practice, facilitate international teaching internships and establish a network of mentors for prospective teachers. Furthermore, the TEFE framework developed in the previous project is to be further disseminated and applied. With its international partnerships, the project supports networked higher education systems and has the potential to stimulate innovative teaching practices while providing valuable data for policy-making.

"The project is a forward-looking prime example of the relevance of the internationalisation of teacher training: it demonstrates the direct added value in didactic and practical cooperation - both for prospective teachers and for students," says Professor Christina Hansen, Vice President for International Affairs and Diversity at the University of Passau.

The University of Passau and its partner universities have received EU funding totalling €250,000 for this Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership. TEFE A+ was one of eight projects selected from a total of 47 applications.

TEFE A+ will be implemented over the next three years by a consortium of six European universities:

  • Aston University, United Kingdom
  • Comenius University Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Hungary
  • State University of Navarra (UPNA), Spain
  • South Bohemian University of Budweis, Czech Republic
  • University of Passau, Germany

The University of Passau will lead the strategic promotion of internationalisation within the TEFE initiatives and can draw on its strong international connections and experience.
