The Urban Gardening project was initiated at the University of Passau in 2021 with the help of the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry on the University of Passau campus as part of the Urban Gardening - Demonstration Gardens for Bavaria project. The Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry financed the project for two years. In addition to traditional and mobile raised beds, the demonstration garden also features a mixed perennial planting, "hydroponic" systems that require almost no soil and vertical gardens that save space. In this way, the University of Passau demonstrates how horticulture is possible for everyone in a very limited space and at the same time provides food for bees and insects.
"The urban gardening trend has reached Passau and Lower Bavaria. It contributes to the sustainability of food production throughout the world and has considerable future potential as an alternative to large-scale industrial agriculture", says Professor Werner Gamerith, the University Executive's Commissioner for the Cross-Functional Task of Sustainability.
