In an unbroken trend over the past few years, international student numbers have grown again, crossing the ten-percent threshold. The gender distribution has remained unchanged, with 60 percent female and 40 percent male students. This semester, there are 4,062 first-semester students in Passau, compared to 3,337 first-semester students in winter semester 2016-17.
University President Carola Jungwirth said: 'This semester we are seeing a strong increase in new students at their first semester. We are profiting from a peak year in secondary school leavers but also from our enduring efforts to belong to the best universities in the world.' The University is well-prepared for the greater numbers thanks to circumspect planning with the faculties and the University's professional room planning.
Popular degree programmes are the bachelor's and master's programmes in Business Administration and Economics, International Cultural and Business Studies and Media and Communication. The newly launched B.A. Journalism and Strategic Communication will start with some 50 students, an excellent first result. Students' interest in the teacher education programmes has risen again, bucking the downward trend of recent years. This is particularly reflected in a noticeable increase in new students enrolled in the primary education teacher education programme. Professor Jungwirth: 'This has brought us a big step closer to achieving our aim of securing the supply of teachers in Bavaria, particularly in the region of Lower Bavaria, for the long term.'
1,314 students enrolled at the University of Passau are foreign citizens, bringing the proportion of international students up to 10.4 percent. Austrian students form the largest group of international students at Passau, followed by India, China and the Russian Federation.
