Tema Port
The Port of Tema - Ghana's largest seaport - connects the country to global goods traffic and, as a central trading hub, enables the export of goods. However, hundreds of thousands of tons of chicken meat also arrive here from Brazil, the U.S. and the EU, which have displaced the Ghanaian poultry industry. The port of Tema is also an important transshipment point for landlocked countries bordering Ghana, such as Burkina Faso. The port was established in its modern form in the 1950ies under President Kwame Nkrumah and has been constantly expanded since. The port alone employs thousands of people with different skill levels. Tema has also developed into one of the major industrial centers of Ghana. Concurrent with the development of the port, over the last decades, the city itself has become an attractive destination to people from Ghana and the neighboring countries (TMA 2023).
