Fort Printzenstein
Originally built by the Danes in the 18th century, Fort Prinzenstein was first used as a trading post (for the exchange of goods) and later as a stopover for the transatlantic slave trade. Slaves were held here under the most inhumane conditions before being shipped to the Caribbean. In the middle of the 19th century it became the property of the British. Today, the fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a memorial that keeps alive the memory of those atrocious times and inspires contemplation. Due to its location directly on the Gulf of Guinea, Fort Prinzenstein has been repeatedly and massively damaged by floods in recent decades.
