Internships abroad

Due to an ever-increasing international focus and economic integration across national borders, potential employers now attach great importance to international experience. In addition to a semester abroad as part of your degree programme, an internship abroad offers a further opportunity to enrich your own wealth of experience and gain valuable practical experience in an intercultural context. Get to know other cultures, working environments and perspectives and improve your foreign language skills in everyday working life.

Preparation for the time abroad

Going abroad often involves a lot of preparation. In addition to looking for a suitable internship position, you should therefore also start with the accompanying organisation – depending on the destination country – six to twelve months before the start of the internship and familiarise yourself with the application formalities in the respective country.

Visas, flights, accommodation, etc. – an internship abroad can often cost more. You can receive financial support through our supported scholarship programmes for internships abroad. As many scholarship programmes require a certain level of study progress, you should take any requirements into account when planning your studies. It may also make sense for you to do an internship in Germany first.

You should also be aware of the different cultural contexts when doing an internship abroad. The ZKK seminars on intercultural competence prepare you for your stay abroad.

Below you will find a selection of scholarship programmes, experience reports, information on visas, finding accommodation, living costs and safety advice.

For internships in France, please observe the statutory provisions on internship remuneration.

Our checklist "How do I plan my internship abroad (with Erasmus+)?" for students with a disability or chronic illness will help you plan your stay abroad.

Voluntary service abroad can be an alternative or supplement to an internship abroad. The European network Eurodesk offers an overview of the different ways to go abroad – for example, by volunteering.

Among others, the Franco-German Youth Office also offers a subsidised voluntary service programme for ten to twelve months in France.

Contact points for internship seekers

The careersUP careers portal from Future: Careers and Competencies offers you an extensive selection of internships abroad in addition to domestic offers.

We also offer you an overview of numerous other job exchanges and portals that can help you find an internship abroad.

You can also find current advertisements for internships in other European countries on the Erasmus platform.

The Study & Work International project also offers an internship abroad portal and accompanying information for students at all Bavarian universities.

Reports in ILIAS

In ILIAS you will now find a large number of anonymised internship reports from Germany and all over the world, which can serve as inspiration and help you make your decision. Simply log in to the database with your ZIM ID and start browsing. New reports are being added all the time!

Erasmus internships

Internships in other European countries can often be funded with Erasmus+. An interactive world map shows you where our students have already completed internships abroad and benefited from funding.

Pedagogical Exchange Service offers students from Germany the opportunity to support teachers at foreign educational institutions for six to eleven months as foreign language assistants (FSA) in German lessons. This gives you the opportunity to gain valuable practical teaching experience and an insight into the education system and teaching methods of the respective host country.

With an interactive world map, PASCH-net enables a worldwide search for internship schools. More than 2,000 schools in around 120 countries are clearly listed here with their school profiles and website details. The Pasch-net is an initiative of the Federal Foreign Office, which is jointly coordinated by the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA), the Goethe-Institut (GI), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Educational Exchange Service (PAD of the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Compulsory internship

A specific internship is not declared as a compulsory internship by the University in advance. Final recognition is usually only granted after successful completion of your internship.
Have you completed an internship and would like to register it as a compulsory internship?
Recognition is not decided by the ZKK, but by the person responsible for internships in your degree programme.

Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies and Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences

For subject-related questions about the compulsory internship, students of the Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences can contact the programme coordination team.
You must submit the application for recognition of an internship together with a report and an internship certificate confirming the exact duration of the internship (as well as the form for recording stays abroad in the case of internships abroad) in a PDF document by e-mail to praktikum.sobi-geku@uni-passau.de. Please name the file as follows: "Lastname, Firstname_DegreeProgramme_Date.pdf" (example: "Doe, Jane_BA_ICBS_01.01.2024.pdf"). Note that the date format is DD.MM.YYYY Files that do not meet these requirements will not be processed.
For further information, please refer to the joint internship guidelines for the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes of the Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences. These provide information on the aim, content, duration, timing and recognition of internships as well as on the preparation of an internship report. Furthermore, the guidelines contain information on those study programmes for which a compulsory internship is required by the study and examination regulations.

Faculty of Law

Information on the practical study periods in the Law degree programme can be found on the website of the Faculty of Law.
The contact point for questions regarding the JAPO (2003, §25 and §49) state examination in law is the Landesjustizprüfungsamt (state judicial examination board).
If you have any further questions, especially in the LL.B. Legal Tech, please contact the relevant student advisory service for your degree programme.

Faculty of Business, Economics and Information Systems

Students in the Bachelor's degree programme Digital Transformation in Business and Society are recommended to complete a work placement in a professional field before starting their studies or during lecture-free periods. In the secondary subject “Minor” Entrepreneurship, the "Praxismodul Entrepreneurship" can be chosen. This is a full-time internship lasting at least two months. This internship must be completed in a start-up environment or in a comparable practical environment in terms of content and scope. The application for recognition of the internship or practical experience is made by submitting an internship certificate and an internship report or comparable evidence to the examination board.
Please address your enquiries to: studiengangskoordination.wiwi@uni-passau.de

Other degree programmes

No internship is required for any subjects not listed in the respective study and examination regulations. If required, however, you can request a non-binding letter of recommendation from the ZKK for the completion of a voluntary internship.
