Meeting of first-generation academics

Over recent years, interest in meetings for first-generation academics, i.e. the first in their family to take up university studies, has been growing. Support for this group of students comes from organisations like Arbeiterkind.de, the Executive Support Unit for Diversity and Gender Equality and others.

There are always lots of questions that first-generation academics are unable to answer using their parent's experience or the experience of their parent's friends. Frequently, there is a gap between their life as a student and their family background, which can lead to financial issues or a feeling of insecurity at university.

To heighten awareness for this topic, we – the Passau support group of Arbeiterkind.de in collaboration with Dr Alexandra Schick (Future: Careers and Competencies), Dr Petra Redel (Graduate Centre) and Antje Sarodnick (Executive Support Unit for Diversity and Gender Equality) – would like to invite you to a kick-off meeting on 11 June at 17:00 in Room 308 (building on Ludwigstrasse 8).

The purpose of this meeting is to start a conversion and to share experiences. Building on this, first-generation students at the University of Passau can then discuss ways of networking amongst themselves and let us know how we should reach out to them and how we can encourage and support them. We look forward to the exchange and ask you to let us know by e-mail on passau@arbeiterkind.de (Instagram @arbeiterkind.de_passau) whether you wish to take part in the meeting. You are welcome to sign up with us in advance if you are interested in the topic or have questions!
