PROMOS scholarship programme

Scholarships for students of all faculties

One of Passau University’s goals is to further increase the mobility of its students. To this end, students from all faculties can apply for scholarships for short-term stays abroad (up to six months) in certain countries. This applies to both study stays and internships.

Who can apply?

German students and German equivalent students with permanent residence in Germany, who are enrolled at the University of Passau, in Diploma, Magister, state examinations, Bachelor or Master programmes and who have not yet received any support from the PROMOS programme in the same educational segment, as well as non-German students and university graduates, who are enrolled in a programme at the University of Passau with the goal to obtain a degree at the University of Passau or a doctorate.

Students can apply taking these conditions into account,

  • who are applying for the partnership programmes of the University of Passau outside Europe.
  • who are applying on their own initiative to host institutions worldwide to study (freemovers or visiting students) or for language and/or specialist courses.
  • who are applying for an internship abroad outside Europe. (The selection will be made by the Career Service of the University of Passau).

Apart from the Auslands-BAföG (international student loans and grants), students may not receive any further funding for their intended stay.  This includes the Erasmus scholarship as well as financial support from other scholarship providers.

Travel and/or subsistence grants (depending on the destination) for the following projects

  • Study visits lasting at least one month and up to six months
  • Language courses with a duration of at least three weeks to six months; language courses must be taken at higher education institutions or established language institutes and amount to at least 25 hours per week.
  • Internships abroad (Centre for Careers and Competencies)

The maximum funding period is six months. The current funding amount is approx. 350 EUR per month of stay (travel costs are not covered).

Please note that when you apply for a PROMOS scholarship, you are also applying for a travel allowance to promote internationalisation. A double application is therefore not possible and not necessary.

Application documents

Please apply with the following documents (please no application folders or similar, loose documents are sufficient!):

  • Please select 'PROMOS' as the type of mobility in the online application form (in the 'Application form for studies abroad – non-EU and freemovers'). Application will be possible again from 16 February 2025
  • Cover letter in German (1 – 1.5 pages maximum; please refer mainly to the added value of your studies abroad)
  • Curriculum vitae in German
  • Academic achievements incl. language certificate and BA certificate, if applicable
  • a current report by a professor or university lecturer at the University of Passau (whether in a sealed envelope or as a simple version; this template can be used)
  • two enrolment certificates from different semesters

Additional documents for freemovers:

  • Proof of contact establishment with the foreign higher education institution
  • Word document with important information about the foreign higher education institution:

    - already contacted contact person incl. address at the International Office
    - already contacted contact person at the respective faculty
    - a list of interesting courses for your study programme (no Link)
    - Links to the important pages of the higher education institution
    - any other information that you think may be of interest to you
  • Confirmation of the support of a professor at the University of Passau (confirmation of the supervision of a possible partnership)

The aim of the freemover stay is to establish a new partnership. It is important that it is clear from your application that you have made an effort to establish a partnership and that you attach the relevant information to the application documents.

If you are unable to find a professor who will supervise the partnership, you can still apply (with complete documents, but without the professor’s confirmation of support). Your application will then also be considered, albeit at a lower level than that of the students who have a confirmation of support.

In future, only complete documents will be considered. The report may be submitted as the only document up to a maximum of 14 days after the application deadline. Missing documents automatically lead to the exclusion of the application from the procedure, they will not be requested subsequently!

The selection will be made by a university commission. The commission will decide, among other things, on the amount and type of funding. The selection is made without discrimination in accordance with the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) and is based exclusively on objective criteria.

The selection of students for funding is made with the help of the following criteria specified by the DAAD:

  • Academic performance
  • Expert opinion by a professor
  • Language skills
  • commitment outside the university
  • Cover letter
  • Internship or study abroad already completed
  • Study project

Please note: the selection will take at least three months. Please refrain from further inquiries regarding the status of processing! Thank you.

Please note that due to the foreseeable large number of applications and the limited funds available, relatively few scholarships are available. There is no entitlement to funding. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you consider other funding opportunities.

If you have any questions, problems or suggestions for improvement, please contact Stefanie Dallmeier.

In case of approval, the following documents must be submitted subsequently:

  • Declaration of acceptance by the foreign higher education institution (after receipt of the letter of approval)
  • Confirmation by the host university of the actual stay (immediately after the stay abroad)
  • Detailed experience report (immediately after the stay abroad)

Scholarships for study and competition trips

Participation in international student competitions is encouraged as part of the competition trips.

Only excursion leaders, i.e. lecturers and professors etc. can apply for funding. Students cannot apply!

maximum duration of 12 days can be subsidised with a grant towards the cost of the stay.

This is 30 euros per person per day for trips to EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey, and 45 euros per person per day for all other countries.

Potential supporting university representatives can also be funded by the above-mentioned subsidy towards the subsistence costs. A maximum of one supervisor can be supported.

Attention: PROMOS grant for study and competition trips in case of co-financing.

Co-financing of study and competition trips from private funds is always possible.
