Dr. Moises Neil V. Seriño is a professor of the Department of Economics, Visayas State University (VSU), Philippines and currently served as the Vice President for Planning and Development at VSU. He holds a doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Göttingen, Germany with Prof Stephan Klasen as his supervisor. He was a visiting research fellow at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, Japan. He was a John Dillon Fellow of the Australian Center for International and Agricultural Research, Australia and recipient of the USDA Scientific Exchange Fellow at Louisiana State University, USA. He served as a guest lecturer at the Universitas Negeri Malang (Indonesia), University Malaysia Terengganu (Malaysia) and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Labkrabang (Thailand).
He is a board member of the Philippine Agriculture and Economic Development Association. He served as the national co-convenor of the Australia Alumni Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Community of Practice. He is a regular member of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP). In addition, Dr. Seriño has been appointed as one of the members of the Technical Panel for Economics of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Philippines in 2022.
Dr. Seriño is the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding Young Scientist Award given by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Philippines for his research contribution in socioeconomics in the Visayas. In 2023, his research on nature-based solutions was recognized as the outstanding research paper during the regional research symposium in Eastern Visayas, Philippines. His research interests include climate change, agricultural economics, environmental conservation and sustainable development. As a visiting researcher at the Bioeconomy Economics Research Group, University of Passau, he will be working on evaluating the role of mangrove ecosystem in protecting coastal communities from typhoon related hazards in the Philippines. He will also be working on assessing the adaptive capacity of small scale rice farmers on climate resilient agricultural practices.
