News From the Welcome Centre Team

Goodbye Katharina and Nele

Our team was thrilled to have Katharina on board since May 2023 and Nele since April 2024, and we are incredibly grateful for their outstanding contributions to the Welcome Centre. Now, it is time to say goodbye, as Katharina is moving to Hamburg for her Master’s studies and Nele to Chemnitz for hers. They approached every task with great joy and dedication. Whether organizing a day trip to Salzburg, a hike along the Ilzschleife, or a guided tour of Passau, Katharina, always gave her best to create an unforgettable experience for everyone. Nele, meanwhile, played a vital role in providing newcomers with advice and support e.g. on visa requirements, residence permits and Campus Cards, becoming an essential part of our team.

Dear Nele and Katharina, we will miss you and wish you the best for the future!

Welcome Wisdom, Mira and Matvii

We would like to give a warm welcome to our newest team members! Wisdom has been studying M.A. Governance and Public Policy at the University for over a year. Just like Wisdom, Mira also studies M.A. Governance and Public Policy and has spent extended periods abroad, including in Ghana and France. And last but not least, Matvii is studying European Studies, specialising in History and Slavic Studies. Welcome on board to all three of you!

Wisdom, Mira, and Matvii will support our team with event planning, consulting, and apartment searches.

Invitation to the Welcome Centre’s International Dinner

We would like to warmly invite you to our famous International Dinner.

For all those who haven’t had the chance to enjoy our special dinner yet: The idea of this evening is to experience typical meals of all your different home countries. There is no need for you to cook a complete course – small tapas-style dishes are enough! The room we will meet in has a small kitchenette so that we are also able to warm up some of the dishes or keep them cold if needed.

Your family and friends are welcome to join us, too!

This event will take place on Thursday 14 November 2024 at 18:00 at the Clubroom 005, ITZ Innstraße 43.

If you are interested in participating, please send us an email at researchmobility@uni-passau.de.

We look forward to seeing you!

Save the Date(s): Christmas Party and Christkindlmarkt Visit

Additionally to the International Dinner, we would like to draw your attention to two more events which will take place in December. Please save the date for our Christmas Party, on 12 December, and for our Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) visit on 19 December. More information on both events is coming soon.

Recap of our Daytrip to Český Krumlov

On 19 October, we travelled to the beautiful town of Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic. To describe our day trip in one word would be marvelous! In groups, we explored this charming town, surrounded by the winding Vltava river. We walked up to the castle and enjoyed a panoramic view of the city. On our way back to Passau, we had dinner together in Hauzenberg, where we had the chance to connect over a nice meal. The Welcome Centre would like to thank you all for joining us on this trip and making it as wonderful as it was!

Recommendation Corner: Get Ready for Christmas Markets

‘Tis the season when the Passau city centre lights up with festive Christmas decorations, and the Christmas markets are back in town! It’s never too early to recommend a few Christmas markets near Passau that you should definitely visit this year. Don’t forget to check out all the links we have down below for the exact opening hours. Whether you turn it into a bingo game or just visit one, here are our recommendations:

Passau (26 November – 22 December)

Our first recommendation is pretty obvious. Passau has a great Christmas market and every year there are many special events. Note that we already have an event planned where we will go to this Christmas market together on 19 December! Not only we will get to enjoy the Christmas market together but on 19 December they will have a special event. For more information on other events they have, please visit this website.

München (25 November – 24 December)

The Munich Christmas market is one of the famous ones in Germany. Being the Bavarian capital, it gets very crowded but for a reason! Who can say no to a beautiful Christmas market right in the centre of the city, in front of the Rathaus (City hall)? Although you need to take a train for a couple of hours and come back, it is worth it! For more information, check out here.

Nürnberg (29 November – 24 December)

If we had to recommend you the best one, this one would be it. Why? Because it is the biggest and the most magical. The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest and most famous Christmas Markets in the world. As you walk from the metro station to the centre of the Christmas market, there are already festivities along the way. It feels like you are entering a magical Christmas town. For more information on opening ceremony and hours, please visit here.

Schärdinger Winterzauber (14 November – 22 December)

Just a 20-minute train ride away is the Schärding Christmas market! They have Punschzeit from 14 November to 22 December, where you can enjoy hot punch, and Adventzeit from 29 November to 15 December, open on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Advent weekends. Visit their Instagram page, for more information on opening hours.

Waldweihnacht am Baumkronenweg (Treetop Walk) Kopfing (22 November – 22 December)

Last but not least, we have a Christmas market in the forest in Austria. It may not be the easiest to reach, but it’s so worth it! How could it not be our personal favorite when it’s set in a snow-covered forest with a cosy Christmas market right in the middle? The Wild Forest Christmas Market in Baumkronenweg Kopfing, Austria, is surely the most fairytale-like Christmas market of them all! It’s also one of the few Christmas markets that isn’t extremely crowded but does have an entry fee (7 euros) for ages 15 and up. If you don’t have access to a car, don’t worry! It’s still reachable by train and bus. Just search for a route from Passau Hbf to Kopfing im Innkreis Götzendorf. After arriving, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the Christmas market. For more information, please visit here.
