Additionally, we introduce a new society at the University of Passau and highlight a fascinating digital magazine worth exploring.

We hope you can join in the activities we have curated for you!

The Foreigners' Office of the City of Passau has moved. Since 01 July 2024, the new location of the Foreigners' Office of the City of Passau is Dr.-Ernst-Derra-Straße 2, 94036 Passau.

You can reach it with the city bus lines 1,2,8 and 9 via the stop "Kohlbruck-Erlebnisbad" and with the city bus lines 5 and 6 via the stop "Dr.-Ernst-Derra-Straße".

The e-mail contact auslaenderamt@passau.de remains unchanged.

The Welcome Centre is Not Available Between 12-16 August

The Welcome Centre will be temporarily unavailable from August 12th to August 16th. During this period, our office will be closed. If you have any questions or need assistance, we kindly advise reaching out to us before.

Reminder: Walking Tour around the Ilzschleife

Our next event will once again take you to the beautiful corners of the Passau region. We invite you to our walking tour to the Halser Ilzschleife (Ilz River Loop) tomorrow, Saturday, 13 July. This natural paradise borders the city centre of Passau. Here on the idyllic hiking trail alongside the meandering river you will be able to unwind and immerse yourself in nature and find tranquility in the gentle lapping of the water, green banks, and low-hanging branches.

We will meet at 11:00 at the Landrichterstraße bus stop in Hals. From there, we will set off together and stop off at the Gasthof “Zur Triftsperre” around midday for a group lunch before continuing our walk. There are no steep paths or climbs and the trail is beginner and family friendly so everyone can participate. The walk will take about an hour in total, but can be extended individually. Although the weather for tomorrow should be mild, around 20-23 degrees Celsius with a mix of sun and clouds, you could still consider bringing swimmsuits too, to take a chance to swim in the Ilz River, just in case.

The meeting point at the Landrichterstraße bus stop is easy to reach by bus from the ZOB (10:45-10:58; line 4; direction to Hochstein). Otherwise you can also come by bike, on foot, or by car.

We look forward to many registrations at researchmobility@uni-passau.de and a summery day in nature with you!

Your Guide to Top Lake Destinations

For the days of leisure, when the sun is out and it is too hot in the city, there is a need to soak in the sun and swim, or just be near the water to cool down. There are numerous lakes in Bavaria and Austria, perfect to visit for a day (or more). We have selected some options for you which are either close to Passau or reachable via public transport.

Near Passau

Our first category involves the closest options.

Ilzstau-Hals: You can easily reach Halser Stausee with bus 4. It takes around 15 minutes from ZOB to arrive at the bus stop Hals. From there, it is only a 5 minute walk to the swimming area.

Ilzstausee-Oberilzmühle: This one is bigger but farther away than the Halser Stausee. You can take bus 5 from ZOB to arrive at the bus stop Jägerreuth. From there, it is a 25 minute walk to Oberilzmühle.

Badeplatz Schifferer See: The small lake in Neuhaus am Inn can be reached by bike, mostly along the Inn cycle trail, which is very nice too (the Austrian side is a bit more gentle than the German side - in total it makes a nice round trip). From Passau it will take you about an hour. Or take a 30 minute bus ride on the 6106 bus to reach the Kriegerdenkmal, Neuhaus a. Inn bus stop. From there, it's a 25 minute walk to reach the lake's designated swimming area.

Bonus: If you don’t like to swim in lakes, the Passauer Erlebnisbad (Peb) is a great choice for you! There are many inside and outside swimming pools and slides as well as a kids’ pool. Plus, on 27 July 2024, from 10:00 18:00, there is a special Family fest (€6 entry fee).

Around Munich

Munich is surrounded by numerous beautiful lakes, including smaller ones within the city itself. However, we recommend three lakes that are easily accessible by an one hour train ride from Munich Main station: Ammersee (station Herrsching), Tegernsee (station Gmund or Tegernsee)  and Starnberger See (station Starnberg or Possenhofen). You will find swimming options within 10 min walks from the mentioned stations. Using a Deutschlandticket or Bayernticket can significantly reduce costs. For train connections and timetables, visit https://www.bahn.de/.

In Austria

Given our proximity to the Austrian border, it only makes sense to check out the lakes in Austria. With its beautiful landscape, Austria also has some of the most beautiful lakes, and there is an affordable train ticket! The Freizeit-Ticket OÖ is a day travel card. The ticket costs €19.90 per day and includes up to two adults and two children (under the age of 15). Because the Passau train station (Hbf) is also served by the Austrian railway (ÖBB), Passau is included in the ticket. Please find more information here.

There are two excellent lake options within a 2-3 hour train ride: Attersee  and Traunsee.

To reach Attersee, take the train to Attersee Bahnhof. From there, you can walk to Erlebnisbad Attersee am Attersee  and Freibadeplatz Sprinzensteinpark - both are reached within a 3 minutes walk. There are also other swimming areas within a short walk from the station, such as Badewiese Attersee (10 minutes) and Öffentlicher Badeplatz (10 minutes). Another possibility to reach Attersee via train is to go to Kammer-Schörfling Bahnhof.

To reach Traunsee, take the train to Traunkirchen Bahnhof. From there, you can walk to two swimming areas: Öffentlicher Badeplatz Bräuwiese (13 minutes) and Öffentlicher Badeplatz Imwinkl (15 minutes). Alternatively, take the train to Traunkirchen Ort station for Badeinsel mit Seebadbecken, just a 7 minute walk from the station.

Recap of Oide Dult

At the end of May, we once again attended a classic Bavarian event: the traditional Oide Dult in the Klostergarten. We made ourselves comfortable in the beer tent with liters/mugs of beer, non-alcoholic drinks and pretzels. We had a great evening with lots of stimulating conversations in a small, sociable group of new researchers and those who have been here for a while.

Recommendation Corner: Festival Fever

For this July's newsletter, we have a special theme: festivals in and around Passau! Are you ready to listen to live music and make the most of the summer? We've compiled a variety of festivals for you!

Festspiele Europäische Wochen Passau

Alongside the Saar Music Festival, the European Weeks are the only festival in Europe today that takes place in three European countries and whose top-class events are held in churches, monasteries, castles and palaces as well as in open-air venues. Internationally renowned as well as regionally known artists are offered a platform to present themselves to art and culture lovers.

Ilzer Haferlfest

The Haferlfest on the Ilz River is a reminder of Passau’s past as a fishing district and harbour. To this day, the people of Passau maintain traditions closely linked to the water.

The Haferlfest takes place from 1 to 4 August 2024 at Löwenmühlstraße.

Rosa Laub Festival

Just a 30 minute bus ride from Passau, the Rosa Laub Festival features young, hand-picked bands and solo artists from a wide range of genres. Enjoy this four-day festival from July 11 to 14. Free camping options are available. Both multi-day and daily tickets can be purchased online in advance or on site. From July 11-13 children aged 0-13 can be brought for free.

On Sunday, July 14, the last day of the festival, there will be special activities and music for children from 14:00 to 17:30, with entry priced at only 5 Euros per person (children under 3 enter free). The children's activities will be followed by a public screening event at 18:00, which is free to attend.

To reach the festival, you can take bus 6106 from ZOB towards Schärding/Bad Füssing, which takes 30 minutes, or bike approximately 40 minutes (12 km) along the Innradweg West bike route towards Schärding.

Eulenspiegel Zeltfestival

The Eulenspiegel Tent Festival, featuring concerts, cabaret, comedy events, and a cosy beer garden, has become an integral part of Passau's summer months. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Eulenspiegel Zeltfestival, which takes place at the Ortspitze in Passau’s Altstadt, where the three rivers meet, from July 2 to 21, 2024.
