Over recent years, various organisations like Arbeiterkind.de or graduate centres and other institutions have increasingly been paying attention to first-generation academics – in other words, people who are the first in their family to pursue university studies. When starting one's studies as a first-timer, there are many questions that cannot be answered using one's parents' experience or the experience of peers. Sometimes, a formidable gap can develop between a first-timer's life as a student and their life at home with family. Furthermore, first-generation students may face problems funding their studies or generally feel insecure or out of place at university.
The preparation team – Dr Petra Redel, Dr Alexandra Schick, Martina Nigl (STWNO), Regine Fahn, and students (Arbeiterkind e. V.) – invites all first-generation students to a second meeting on Tuesday, 29 October, from 17:00 to 19:00 in room 308 at Ludwigstrasse 8.
All first-generation students and staff (regardless of employment as academic staff or professional support staff) are invited. You are welcome to join, even if you did not attend the first meeting.
The purpose of this meeting is to explore ways of addressing, motivating and supporting first-generation students at the University of Passau. We look forward to the exchange with you!
